Healthy Incentives Program (HIP)

Using HIP Benefits at Farmer Dave’s

What is the HIP Program?

The Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) is a statewide program. If you spend your SNAP dollars at a participating retailer, you can earn extra benefits (up to $40/month for a household of 1-2 people, $60/month for a household of 3-5 people, and $80/month for a household of 6+ people).

Currently, we are waiting on the equipment to be able to accept SNAP benefits at our farm stands. We are on a waiting list with the state government. We do not know when the equipment will arrive, but please feel free to check back periodically!

In the meantime, here is how you can use your HIP benefits at Farmer Dave’s.

Many of the farmers markets we participate in do accept SNAP benefits. Check with the individual farmers market to verify. You can also use SNAP benefits to sign up for our CSA program, which is a subscription of weekly boxes of produce. Download a membership agreement form, or contact farm@farmerdaves.net or call (978) 349-1952 for a registration form. For SNAP customers, we set up a monthly payment plan to cover the cost of the CSA (rather than having you pay for the entire season up front).

We offer two sizes of the vegetable share (a small at $94.09 per month, and a regular at $129.01 per month, from June through October). The fruit share comes in one size at it is $77.60 per month from June through October.

Under the HIP program, you are eligible for either $40, $60, or $80 per month reimbursed when you pay for your share(s) via your SNAP benefits. The reimbursement amount is $40/month for a household of 1-2, $60/month for a household of 3-5, and $80/month for a household of 6 or more.

Both the payment and the reimbursement would automatically come from your SNAP account monthly, on the same day of the month that your benefits are loaded.

What if I don’t want to join the CSA? Where can I use HIP benefits now?

Until we have the equipment available at our farm stands, you can check out other HIP retailers in the area. If you live in the Dracut/ Lowell / Tewksbury / Westford area, you can visit Mill City Grows at any of their mobile markets to use their HIP benefits. You can visit www.millcitygrows.org for a schedule of mobile markets. If you do not live in the Dracut/Lowell/Tewksbury/Westford area, they can check out www.mass.gov/agr/massgrown/hip.htm or call Project Bread’s FoodSource Hotline 1 (800) 645-8333 to find other HIP retailers near you.
